Knight[]
Knight is Sir John's locomotive. He is painted sliver with blue lining and medieval time styled crests on him and his traincars. Like most vehicle characters in The Animated Series, he does not talk, but can express himself with noises like Bull, Opie, Loopy Loco, Brutus, Old Rust, and Steamer.
Knight's Basis[]
Knight is based off the Pioneer Zephyr, which was a diesel-powered permanently-coupled articulated locomotive built by the Budd Company in 1934 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. It set a speed record for travel between Denver, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois, when it made a 1,015-mile (1,633 km) non-stop "Dawn-to-Dusk" dash in 13 hours 5 minutes at an average speed of 77 mph (124 km/h). For one section of the run it reached a speed of 112.5 mph (181 km/h), just short of the then US land speed record of 115 mph (185 km/h). It was later retired in 1960, but was donated and preserved to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, where it remains on public display. The locomotive is generally regarded as the first successful streamliner on American railroads. Another Burlington Zephyr trainset, the Mark Twain Zephyr, is undergoing restoration to operational condition as of 2020.
Black Phantom, the Holiday Express, and Scorcher are other members of this class.
Trivia[]
- Unlike other trains, which have a seatbelt, Knight has a roller coaster-style over the shoulder restraint.
